Diagnostic Approach

Diagnosis is typically straightforward and based on a clinical examination of the eyelid. Mr Khan will distinguish a chalazion from other eyelid lumps, such as styes or cysts.

Clinical Examination

Visual inspection and palpation of the eyelid to assess the size, tenderness, and consistency of the lump.

Differential Diagnosis

Ruling out other conditions like styes (infections) or, rarely, tumours, especially in recurrent cases.

Symptoms

Common symptoms include:

Small lump on the eyelid
Mild pain or irritation (initially)
Eyelid redness
Heaviness of the eyelid

Expert Management & Treatment

Most chalazions resolve with home treatment, but persistent ones may require medical intervention.

Conservative Care

Warm compresses and lid massage are the first line of treatment to unblock the gland.

Incision & Curettage

A minor surgical procedure to drain the cyst if it doesn't resolve or causes significant discomfort.

Prevention & Maintenance

Regular lid hygiene can help prevent recurrence.

Warm Compresses

Apply heat daily to keep oil glands flowing freely.

Lid Massage

Gentle massage helps prevent blockage of the meibomian glands.

Hygiene

Keep eyelids clean and avoid rubbing your eyes.
