A macular hole is a defect in the macula, the part of the eye responsible for sharp central vision. It causes blurred and distorted vision. Surgery is often required to repair the hole and improve vision.

Book ConsultationConfirming the diagnosis and staging the hole is crucial for planning treatment.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides a detailed cross-section of the macula, confirming the presence and size of the hole.
Measuring the level of vision loss and mapping the area of distortion or missing vision.
Symptoms usually develop gradually and affect central vision:
Surgery is the only effective treatment to close the hole and improve vision.
Removing the vitreous jelly and peeling the membrane to release traction, allowing the hole to close.
A gas bubble is placed in the eye to gently press the edges of the hole together as it heals.
Following instructions after surgery is critical for success.
You may need to keep your head in a specific position (face down) for a few days.
Do not fly until the gas bubble has completely absorbed (usually a few weeks).
Vision improves gradually as the hole closes and the eye heals.
